Post-Baccalaureate Program in Nursing Hosts Career Talk: “The Art of Nursing — Sharing Experiences on Building Patient Trust”
On April 30, 2025, the Post-Baccalaureate Program in Nursing at Asia University specially invited Specialist Nurse Yu-Fen Chen from the Breast Surgery Department of China Medical University Hospital to give a lecture entitled “The Art of Nursing: Experiences in Building Patient Trust.” The event created a warm and inspiring atmosphere, with active interaction throughout. In addition, it provided students with a deeper understanding of the role of a specialist nurse.
Drawing on her extensive clinical experience, Nurse Yu-Fen Chen shared insights on how to build trust with patients and their families in high-pressure medical environments. She emphasized: “Feeling cared for is what gives patients the strength to keep going.” She explained that family members’ concern and care often manifest as emotional outbursts toward nurses. She encouraged students not to be affected by negative emotions in the moment, but to understand and embrace the care behind those emotions, which often becomes the foundation of genuine patient trust.
She concluded with the words: “Caring for patients with heart enriches your own life,” highlighting that nursing is not merely a display of technical skills, but a process of deeply connecting with people. In patients’ most vulnerable moments, the presence and listening of nurses often become crucial support that helps them move forward. The value of nursing extends beyond physical care to understanding and supporting patients’ inner struggles after trust has been established.
Director Pi-Chu Lin encouraged students to draw both professional and humanistic lessons from this lecture, appreciating the warmth and significance of nursing, and to become empathetic, gentle yet steadfast caregivers in clinical settings. Faculty member Hui-Chi Li added that only through abundant positive energy and determination can students create meaningful and compassionate nursing practice.
